Doctor of Medicine (MD) Program
The Doctor of Medicine program at St. George’s University, the premier Caribbean medical school located in beautiful Grenada, opens doors for a medical career on an international scale.
The MD program at SGU is accredited and/or approved by many external regulatory and accrediting bodies, including:
- The Grenada Medical and Dental Council, Ministry of Health of the Government of Grenada
- The New York State Education Department
- The New Jersey State Board of Medical Examiners
- The Medical Board of California
- Licensed by the Florida Commission on Independent Education
- The US Department of Education’s National Committee on Foreign Medical Education and Accreditation has deemed the Grenada Medical and Dental Council’s accreditation standards to be comparable to those used in the United States. Comparability of accreditation standards is a major component necessary to allow MD students at SGUSOM to qualify for government-sponsored loans.

MD Program Curriculum and Format
St. George’s University’s exceptional MD program has multiple entry points.
- We offer a traditional four-year MD program for students entering with a bachelor’s degree, as well as preclinical programs that lead into our four-year med school program.
- The five-, six- and seven-year preclinical programs include coursework designed to prepare our students for medical school.
- Our medical school students have an opportunity to learn medicine in some of the best and most well-known hospitals in the world.
- Clinical studies include core rotations, sub-internships, primary care, and elective rotations.
Traditional Four-Year MD Program
The first two years of the Four-Year MD Program concentrate on the traditional basic science disciplines on the True Blue campus in Grenada, the Caribbean.
- Laboratory experience is an integral part of these first two years, along with small group discussions designed for problem-based learning and early integration of the clinical medicine into basic sciences at the General Hospital in Grenada.
- Students may also consider completing one year of preclinical sciences and/or the first year of basic sciences in the United Kingdom as part of the St. George’s University of Grenada School of Medicine/Northumbria University Four- or Five-Year MD Program.
The final two years focus on clinical sciences, with training at SGU’s clinical centers and affiliated hospitals in the United States, United Kingdom, and Grenada.
- Clinical training emphasizes responsibility, maturity, and compassion in the development of professional excellence.
- Students learn how to conduct themselves as physicians, take responsibility, work harmoniously with professional colleagues, and exhibit maturity.
Doctor of Medicine Program: Pathway to Residency Match
Students enrolled in our Four-Year Doctor of Medicine program spend two years studying the basic sciences, followed by access to clinical training opportunities at over 70 affiliated hospitals and clinical centers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Grenada.
Entry points are available for students from any education system around the world—including a four-year program for those entering with a traditional baccalaureate degree, and five-, six-, and seven-year preclinical programs for those entering with undergraduate degrees.

Preclinical Year 1 - 7 Year MD Program
The seven–year MD program is designed for students who have secondary school credentials who need to study a complete course in the foundation sciences necessary to be successful in the MD program. With a focus on preclinical sciences, social sciences, and humanities, the seven-year entry point offers this necessary foundation.

Preclinical Year 2 - 6 Year MD Program
Entry into the six-year MD program is designed for students with the further education examination qualifications and provides foundation sciences necessary for mastering the basic and clinical sciences phases of the program later in the MD curriculum.

Preclinical Year 3 - 5 Year MD Program
The five-year MD program is designed for students with Advanced Level or International Baccalaureate credentials. Students build on an academic background in science with challenging medical education coursework in anatomy, physiology, and other foundational sciences necessary for success in the basic sciences and clinical sciences phases of the MD degree program in SGU’s medical school.
Entry Qualifications
- 3 Advanced Levels/CAPE Units 1 and 2: A’s and B’s in Chemistry, Biology, and either Math or Physics.
- Full IB Diploma with strong grades. 3HL science courses recommended; 2HL required
- India 10 + 2: Minimum 80%
Four-Year MD Program
Year 1 and 2 (Basic Sciences)
Students complete their courses on the True Blue Campus in Grenada. Students learn through traditional lectures and laboratory sessions augmented by small–group sessions and case–based learning exercises.
Year 3 and Year 4 (Clinical Training)
Students complete their final two years at SGU-affiliated hospitals and clinics across the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Grenada using bedside learning, augmented by lectures, small groups, and directed study.

One MD Degree Program, Four Locations

Are the scholarship opportunities for Med Students from Canada?
For MD applicants from Canada, there are scholarship opportunities. The Canada Scholarship offers partial tuition awards to Canadian citizens/permanent residents who exhibit academic excellence, demonstrate financial need, and are dedicated to the enhancement of medical care systems. These awards are grants-in-aid and do not have to be repaid.
