Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy
Have fun while gaining a competitive edge in medicine or veterinary medicine.
Pursue your interest in the field of medicine or veterinary medicine with St. George’s University’s unique summer program for high school students and college students.
Given the advice of public health officials, as well as the restrictions put in place by Grenadian government authorities, and out of our sense of obligation to safeguard the safety of our community, dates for the next Med/Vet Leadership Academies will be announced at a later date.
The preclinical and preveterinary tracks combine lectures, field trips, and team-building events. You’ll even gain hands-on training in small-group sessions and lab work for an experience you will never forget — all on our beautiful campus on Grenada’s stunning True Blue peninsula that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.
Drawing upon SGU’s global expertise, CEPH-accredited Public Health program, and medical MBA program, students are introduced to international health care systems, global public health issues, and how the concept of “One Health, One Medicine” affects health care delivery throughout the world.
Plan your summer around one of these educational and cultural experiences by sending in your application while space is still available! Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and a completed application with deposit payment is required to reserve your spot.
The Summer Leadership Academy combines engaging lectures and hands-on, practical experience with fun activities meant to immerse participants in Grenada’s rich culture and beautiful Caribbean environment.
Program and activities are subject to change.

The seats in the academy are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students will be required to listen to lectures, work in labs, and complete medical and veterinary case studies; therefore, we are seeking serious-minded, motivated future doctors and veterinarians to participate.

The cost for the 12-day Medical Leadership Academy for college students — including all meals, accommodations, lectures and transportation in Grenada — is US $2,300 (excluding the optional scuba diving outing).
The Summer Leadership Academy offers open enrollment and seats are limited. What does the tuition cost include?
The tuition includes accommodations, transport on the island, all meals, medical instruction, field trips, and the welcome and closing dinners.
If a student wishes to enroll in a scuba class, this can be arranged at the student’s expense. Certified divers will also have the opportunity to go diving. If you are under the age of 18, you will need to have a parent or guardian sign the release form and mail it back to Betsy Mills. You will not be able to dive without the consent form. If you are certified, you need your cards with you.
Please note that tuition does not include spending money. Make sure you bring additional money for the 10 or 12 days that you will be in Grenada.
How can I contact family or friends when I arrive in Grenada?
Students will have access to the Internet in the campus library. Family and friends will be provided with the blog address to view daily updates. Before arriving in Grenada, families will receive general contact and urgent contact information.
Is there a refund policy?
100% Refund April 30 and earlier. No Refund May 1 and later
What do I need to travel to Grenada?
A valid passport and a letter from the University (which will be provided once we receive your flight details) should be sufficient in most cases to travel to and enter Grenada, but some students may require additional paperwork based on citizenship. We can advise you accordingly.
What do I need to bring to Grenada?
The average temperature in Grenada is 85 degrees year-round, so pack appropriate dress, including swimwear and bug repellent. We recommend light sweaters and sweatshirts for evenings and for places that are air conditioned. High SPF sunscreen lotion is a must. Students do not need to bring their own bed linens and bath towels; they will be supplied for you. There are laundry facilities available in the living accommodations. A detailed list will be included in the orientation package.
Where will I be living while in the Med/Vet Summer Leadership Academy?
The students will be housed in one of our beautiful dorms overlooking the Caribbean Sea on the True Blue campus. The accommodations have common kitchen and bath facilities, and are within walking distance of all the campus facilities.
What if there is room damage?
All dorm rooms will be inspected at the beginning and end of each term. At the end of each term, rooms or apartments will be inspected; if there is any damage, accounts will be charged accordingly.
Will I need to bring my computer or any other electronic devices?
It is not required or recommended to bring your computer with you, but appropriate use of electronics is permitted. Students will have full access to the computer lab, and there is also WiFi in the dorms. The dorm rooms are equipped with 110-volt outlets. However, it is recommended to bring a strip outlet with surge protection if you anticipate charging any valuable devices, e.g. phone, digital camera, or computer.
Do I have to remove my piercings to attend some of the Summer Leadership Academy activities?
Yes. If you have facial piercings, such as lip, eyebrow, nose, cheek, or stretched earlobes, you will have to remove them as there will be visits to the local hospital as well as practice clinical work with professional personnel.
Do I need medical insurance?
All students studying in Grenada are required to carry personal medical insurance. Students are required to bring their medical insurance card and contact information with them to Grenada. Check with your provider to be sure that your coverage will be in effect while in Grenada. It is recommended that students purchase supplemental travel insurance, which includes air evacuation in the event of an emergency.
Will I receive academic credit?
In addition to a certificate of completion, qualifying participants will receive college credit through the School of Arts and Sciences from participating in lectures and clinical practicals.
Is the program offered in multiple languages?
Unfortunately, the university, summer academy, and the island is predominately English speaking. Having proficiency in the English language is a requirement to participate.
